World War Two Project

3 Oct

We have been busy in P7 learning all about World War Two and the Clydebank Blitz . We have being doing a lot of investigation and research into what life was like at the time and have even had a go at digging for victory ourselves (hopefully we will get to taste our salad sometime soon). Some of us even made our own bread! Take a look at our slide show of some of the fantastic things we have made:

World War Two Interesting Facts by Chloe B.

On 1st September 1939 Hitler marched his troops to Poland. Britain and France challenged Hitler and gave him a deadline to take his troops away. Hitler didn’t accept the challenge and war was declared against Germany. The war lasted for six years and most of the rest of the world became involved in World War Two.

The shelters were disguised as part of the garden. When people heard air raid sirens they had to run with a shelter with a blanket. Sometimes you were in there for days! There wasn’t a lot in the shelters, just a bed and a box for food. The roof was made from a wavy metal called corrugated metal and it protected you from the German bombs.

Food, clothes and fuel were rationed in the war, this was because they were in desperately short supply because the Germans were bombing our loaded ships that were importing goods to our country.Β  It was a fair system because everybody could get the same amount of food and it did not matter how much money you had. Food that was in short supply was rationed like: bacon, ham, eggs, butter, jam, sugar, and meat. People were encouraged to ‘dig for victory’ and grow their own vegetables.

Children were sent away from their Mums and Dads to keep them safe and away from the bombs that were destroying the towns and cities. The children went by train or bus, often in school groups and sometimes with their teachers. They lived with families who looked after them and went to a new school .

Β Gas Masks

Everybody, no matter whether an adult, child or baby had their own gas mask, even horses had them. There were especially designed masks for children that looked like Micky Mouse. They were designed to give you protection from poisonous gas. Everyone had to carry their gas masks everywhere with them and children would have gas mask drills in schools.
