Mary’s Meals Backback Appeal

17 Jun

We had a visit today from a representative from Mary’s Meals. We learned that most of the children who benefit from Mary’s Meals and the Backpack Project have suffered war, poverty, famine, or natural disasters. Very often families cannot afford to buy basic things like pencils and copy books, or even suitable clothes for their children to wear to school. And so their children miss out on school and an education. We discovered that a simple backpack with educational materials can be a lifeline to these children as studies show that an education is the best way a chronically poor child can escape poverty in later life.

We are taking part in the appeal in school and looking for any of the following:

  • backpacks (old school bags are ideal)
  • tubes of toothpaste
  • bars of soap
  • toothbrushes (new)
  • towels
  • shorts
  • t-shirts
  • dresses
  • skirts
  • tops
  • flip flops
  • notepads or jotters
  • pencils
  • pencil sharpeners,
  • rubbers
  • rulers
  • small pack of colouring pens/ pencils/ crayons
  • tennis balls
  • spoons
Clothing needed would need to be for ages 4-12. Any old uniforms would be great too! Have a good look at home and bring anything you have into school. Collection boxes will be in the Mensa. Remember to ask parents first please!
